Clarence and Gladys home along Rt. 72 between Macomber and Etam West Virginia
This road above Rt 72 was the orginal St George Turnpike running from Virginia's Northwest Turnpike (today's Rt. 50) to St George and on to Beverly. The earlier turnpike climbed above the valley floor to avoid rock cliffs around the bend. A rock slip cave of legend is in this vicinity. Young Dave Cathell is bringing up the rear of a group of Cathell's out on a early fall Sunday hike.
This steep hillside was farmed by Clarence and Gladys. Note the beehives. In later years, a blackberry patch was located at the top of this hill.
Buffalo Creek provided this cooling swimming hole on the Cathell property .
At the top of the hill were these two beech trees that shared a common limb, forming the letter H.
Making apple butter. The last cow owned by the Cathell's was named Sputnik, after a current icon of the times.
