Agnes Carrico Fretwell, 1962.

Agnes was born in 1876 in Grant Co. West Virginia, a daughter of Joseph Benson Carrico and Emma V. Peters Carrico. Many in the Carrico family were railroad engineers, so perhaps Joseph was temporarily working on a logging railroad at the time at Mt. Storm. This line of the Carrico family was always closely connected with Preston Co. West Virginia. Agnes had a brother William Albert Carrico (b. 1881, d. 1944 at Rowlesburg WV) and a sister Caroline (Carrie) Ellen Carrico Sinclair (b. 1879, d. 1914, age 35, at Sabraton, Monongalia Co., WV), both born in Grant County.

Carrie Sinclair was the mother of Gladys Emma Sinclair Cathell; Gladys and Clarence's home at Etam Preston Co. West Virginia is the location of this photo. Carrie and Benonia Sinclair had other children Willis Sinclair, Arthur Sinclair and Albert Carrico Sinclair.

Aunt Agnes (as she seemed to be called by all in the family) lived at the time of this photo with Patrick and Arlene Sherren in Kingwood Preston Co. West Virginia. Arlene was her daughter(?) The boy in the photo is Pat and Arlene's son, Richard Sherren. My father states that Aunt Agnes was married to Charlie Fretwell, a railroad man, and they always had a big house. Aunt Agnes was a skilled knitter and my brother and I several times received a pair a hand knitted mittens for Christmas from her. The mittens were attached with a long piece of yarn so if you lost one the other one was gone also.

Monongalia County Death record for 1914, Carrie Ellen Carrico Sinclair is second from bottom listing her age as 35 and death from tubercolosis. Perhaps because she was a native, she is also listed in the death records for Preston County in the same year.
