Blackwater Falls
The 33 mile long Blackwater River is one of the streams that make up the Cheat River. As seen in the photo, it gets it name from the amber color of the water, a result of tannin leached from the spruce, hemlock and laurel thickets of its Canaan Valley source. The river meanders through the high alpine valley rimmed by 4,000 foot peaks and past Davis WV starts making it tumultous descent to the Dry Fork at Hendricks WV, falling an incredible 1,200 feet in the process. The combined stream, called the Black Fork, descends another couple of miles to Parsons, WV where it joins Shavers Fork to form the Cheat River. This country was wild and trackless until Henry G. Davis built his West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railroad in the 1880's.
